Species text
Widespread and abundant. In Essex, the Small White can achieve 3 broods in most years. The first brood in spring usually display much fainter markings on the upperside. The summer brood having darker markings and creamy undersides. Crucifer spp. are the main larval foodplant, but many others are used. Nectar sources are also numerous meaning the Small White can be found in almost any habitat. The UK population can be boosted by migration from the continent and the Small White can be particularly abundant along sea walls. Hibernates in the pupal state. References
